Symposium & General Assembly SGM 2025
Last Friday, on 21 November 2025, the annual General Assembly (GA) and the traditional symposium of the Swiss Society for Meteorology (SSM) took place at ETH Zurich. Numerous members as well as weather and climate enthusiasts attended and contributed to a lively and engaging exchange.
During the GA, the board reported on the society’s activities over the past year and presented the current financial situation. In addition, the members voted on changes within the board, setting important foundations for the society’s future work.
As part of the subsequent symposium, participants enjoyed three insightful expert talks:
Oliver Fuhrer (MeteoSchweiz) offered an insight into ICON, the new operational forecasting system of MeteoSwiss, and explained the effort and collaboration required to bring such a system into operation.
Jürg Zogg (SRF Meteo) gave the audience an inside view of weather consulting for major events and illustrated the challenges involved, for example, in supporting a ski race.
In her presentation, Nadine Salzmann (WSL-Institut für Schnee- und Lawinenforschung SLF) explained the processes that can lead to rockfall events and discussed how these conditions evolve under climate change.
Between the talks, the next generation of atmospheric scientists took the stage. Master’s students and PhD candidates presented their projects in small discussion rounds – the Master Table Talks. They were able to showcase their research, ask questions, and receive valuable feedback from the community.
Another highlight was the SwissMeteoPhoto Contest. The 2025 winners are:
- Place: Sergi González Herrero
- Place: Sven Kotlarski
- Place: Yuri Brugnara
A warm thank you to all speakers and participants who contributed to the success of this event. We are already looking forward to next year’s edition.
